Miss Jayla: The Biggest Thing I Learned From My Mother

HAPPY MOTHERS’ DAY!!! Femme Lounge is joining ‘Children’ everywhere to celebrate their mothers. We are featuring some of the people we all love to read from, as they tell us the biggest things they learned from their mothers.

By Miss Jayla

Mothers nurture, mothers guide, mothers pray.

My mom is my biggest cheerleader, always encouraging, never putting pressure. She taught me to be confident – sit up straight , look people in the eyes, shake hands firmly – and go for what I want.

“Ugo, I never want you second-guessing yourself. You can do it”, she’d say to me any time I doubted myself.
As a child she let me ask questions, patiently answering them, and letting me make serious life decisions at an age when parents wouldn’t even trust their children to pick the right pair of shoes.
I learned to be responsible for my actions and their consequences.

I look at my mother and I am still learning how to be the mother I’d like to be. The type of mother she is – strong, compassionate, generous, prayerful, industrious and very selfless – to me.
