Aderonke Apata is a Nigerian lesbian presently living in the UK. In June we published a story of her struggle seeking asylum in the UK and her several attempts to convince the British Home Office that she is a lesbian, and her life will be in danger if she returns to Nigeria.
Her campaign for LGBT asylum seekers has received recoginition and she has been voted by the Independent Rainbow List to be one of the 101 most influential LGBT people in the UK.
Here is how she was described;
LGBT asylum campaigner Apata fled persecution for homosexuality in her native Nigeria, and campaigns for LGBT asylum seekers to stay in the UK. Her petition, demanding that she be allowed to stay, gained 320,000 signatures, and her valiant efforts were recognised when she gained the National Diversity Award.
