Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic Becomes Croatia’s First Female President



Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic has defeated Social Democrat and current President Ivo Josipovic by a margin of just one percentage point to become Croatia’s first female president. Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic is a former diplomat and ambassador to Washington, she is also a member of the conservative Croatian Democratic Union.

According to Huffington Post, Grabar-Kitarovic campaigned on the need for a change of course and a more active head of state to help the country overcome its worst economic crisis since independence in 1991.

She will resume office as Croatia’s first woman president on February 19 at age 46.
