The Leading Woman: IHEOMA OBIBI – Her Passion For Flaming Intimate Desires Of The Heart

index

In every weakness lies the greatest strength, but not many search out their weaknesses.

Iheoma Obibi, a feminist, writer and CEO of Intimate Desires is one strong woman because she refused the limitations of her past.

Having survived domestic violence as a child, she naturally grew passionate about advocating for women’s rights. She uses her writing skills to voice out about the challenges of women in the society and advocate on behalf of women who are too frightened to voice out their concerns in a complex society like Nigeria.

After several years of working in a feminist organization and engaging with African women on what they expected in intimate relationships, she observed that more women wanted to be satisfied sexually. Being very outspoken, fearless and bold, some of her friends frequently asked her to purchase items from sex shops and surprisingly she noticed that even those who could get to some of these sex stores were not too comfortable with shopping from such stores openly. All these experiences sparked an idea within her.

In 2010, she started her business ‘Intimate Pleasures Desires of the Heart’ which offers a total package, from online sex toy shop to preparing bridal hampers for bridal showers, birthdays, valentines, wedding anniversaries, exhibitions and one-on-one counseling sessions. She knew having such a business in a rigid cultural and religious setting like Nigeria would be a tough bone to chew. She faced a lot of challenges over the years. One scary challenge was the series of life threats she received from different persons who alleged that her business was corrupting women and teaching them to be prostitutes.

In all, she has recorded great success over the years, and she doesn’t seem to be running out of business soon as she constantly reaches out to women both in understanding their rights within the society as well as understanding their peculiar sexual lives and needs. She makes radio appearances often with the name ‘Madam. Butterfly’ which she uses to help orient women and men sexually.
