The Leading Woman: Kemi ‘Lala’ Akindoju – A Woman Of Many Parts



Kemi Lala Akindoju fondly called “Lala” is an actor, a drama instructor,a casting director and producer. Born in 1987, Kemi schooled in Lagos throughout out her childhood years up until adulthood. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Insurance from the University of Lagos, and a master’s degree in Media and Communication from the Pan African University.

 In 2005, she started her acting career. Her first appearance was in ‘All I Want For Christmas’ a stage play. For the first five years of her acting career she focused extensively on stage plays. For three years she actively participated in the ‘Theatre @ Terra’ – a theatre initiative supported by the cultural centre, Terra Kulture, located in Lagos.

 Kemi is well known for the authenticity and strength of her stage performances. She has appeared in over 70 stage performances alongside ace actors, producers, directors like Joke Silva, Adesuwa Oyenukwe, Wole Oguntokun, Ikhane Akhigbe, Joy Isi-Bewaji, Bimbo Manuel,Micheal Asuelime, Victor Sanchez and Niji Akanni.

 Asides acting, Kemi is passionate about changing Nigeria through civic participation. She is a founding member of EnoughisEnough Nigeria, SHOW SOME LOVE FOUNDATION (an NGO targeted at reaching out to the less privileged), SLEEVES UP (an NGO established to encourage the young people, in Nigeria, to participate in ways to bring change in the country). She is also an active member of Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts (LAPA) where she functions as a facilitator.

In 2010, she won the award for Actor of the Year at The Future Awards, and then she began picking up TV roles same year. She played the role of Sheila Monroe on the MNet soap, Tinsel, featured in Alan Poza (2012)– a Charles Novia film, and many others. Recently, Kemi performed in ‘Hear word’ another stage play directed by Ifeoma Fafunwa, which casts some of Nollywood’s most seasoned actresses like Joke Silva, Kate Henshaw, Bimbo Akintola, Elvina Ibru, Ufuoma Mcdermott, Taiwo Ajai-Lycett, Iretiola Doyle, Zara Udofia, Omonor Somolu, Odenike, Debbie Ohiri.
