Perpetua Nkwocha is a seasoned footballer who has played both on the national level and the international level. On the national level , she is a member and the captain of the Nigeria women’s national football team. he multiple African champion and African Women’s Footballer of the Year. She also previously played for Swedish club Sunnanå SK. Recently, she took on a laudable project that has elevated her status from being a mere footballer to being a heroine.
Since November, she has partnered wih her club- Clemensnas IF, the local football association and the Swedish church on a project to coach a group of Afghan teenagers.
Young Afghan migrants who love football come to her to learn how to play.
In a recent interview with BBC, Perpetua expresses her elation and intention for the project
“I feel that it’s similar – which is why I have to try to make them happy, because I know where they came from,.I feel so glad that I connected with them and we started this project together. We try to make them feel welcome, try to make them feel happy, try to make them get friends and associate with other Swedish [people].”
Her desire to make these kids happy has moved her , with complains, wear layers of clothes to get through the cold weather as well as attend classes to improve her Swedish
She insists that the effort is worth it-“I feel so great being with these lovely children here,” she said
The children are no doubt , pleased. One of them named Habibullah tells BBC-
“She’s a good coach, we’re all happy”
