An Ibo woman, Victoria Ijeoma Akinsanya, married to a Yoruba man, Akinsanya from Abeokuta fled from her home with her three daughters after several attempts by her in-laws to circumcise them.
According to a report by Bose Adelaja for Vanguard, the tradition of Akinsanya’s family requires that their daughters be circumcised to avoid early deaths in the family.
Women from Ijeoma’s in-laws’ town was said to have stormed her matrimonial home in Festac, Lagos, to forcefully carry out the tradition, but she refused. Subsequent attempts prompted her to flee with the girls.
Ijeoma’s mother, Madam Celestina, said she is against the tradition and had alerted the authorities. When the women returned, Celestina said she got into a heated argument with them.
With Ijeoma’s disappearance, members of her immediate family says they now living in fear.
