Adenike Akinsemolu started Green Campus Initiative when she while lecturing at Adeyemi, a college of the Obafemi Awolowo University. She was surprised that her students could not explain the meaning of ‘going green’ and had little knowledge about their environment.

She also noticed how students littered their classrooms and the school environment with wastes.

All these lead her to start the initiative to encourage students to live their life in a way that they would not harm themselves, the people around them and their environment.

The Green Campus Initiative encourages students to use bicycles and other means of sustainable transportation, conserve energy and water, utilize renewable energy, dispose their wastes properly, become social entrepreneurs through the development of vocational skills and be eco-conscious citizens.

It also educates, engage and enlighten young people to live green as well as equip them with vital tools to positively impact their communities, nation and generation.

Today, the Green Campus Initiative trains university students and equips them with the tools needed to create Green Initiatives on their own campuses.

Adenike who has been widely celebrated for her pioneering work with Green Campus Initiative,  is currently  a Doctoral Candidate of Microbiology at the Federal University of Technology

Adenike is also the Founder of the Girl Prize, which provides financial and mentorship support for young Nigerian secondary school girls with an interest in the sciences.
