In this animated video Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie describes how Americans know very little about Africa, sharing her childhood experiences and the questions she was confronted with by her American classmates.
“The children books that I read…the books didn’t reflect my realities…and so I then have this sort of parallel imaginary life. In my real I ate mangos but in my imaginary life I ate apples. In my real we had two seasons, the dry season and the rainy season and we always had sun, but in my imaginary life from the books I read there were such a thing as winter and snow. My perception of literature changed when I started reading about African literature” she said.
