How Gbemisola Boyede Is Improving Child Care In Nigeria Through Her Facebook Group ‘Ask The Pediatricians’

Gbemisola Boyede is the founder of the Facebook group, Ask ThePediatricians (ATP).

Ask ThePediatricians was born out of the passion to provide accurate information on childcare to mums, dads and caregivers.

A consultant neurodevelopmental pediatrician at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Gbemisola saw children with different medical conditions and how mothers made health decisions they thought were good for their children but later affected them.

Also on the social media space, she was amazed at the responses some mothers get from other mothers who know almost nothing about the development of a child.

Unfortunately, these incorrect responses travel like wildfire and Gbemisola  decided to do something about it.

With over 160,000 members and 10 active pediatricians, questions are answered between two to three days with links to corroborate the response.

The group also has hundreds of photos and posts, including a website where various articles on major topics related to child health and health care issues.

The group also emphasizes on the importance of seeing a qualified practitioner rather than self-medicating especially in cases of emergencies.

The group had it’s first medical outreach to Makoko, a Lagos slum community with limited access to quality health care, on the 1st of October, 2016.

ATP also has a sister group called, Askthegynaecologists.
