Amina Yuguda Wins BBC World News Komla Dumor Award

A Nigerian journalist from the north-east, Amina Yuguda, has won the third BBC World News Komla Dumor Award.

The award was created to honour Komla Dumor, a presenter for BBC World News, who died suddenly in 2014.

Amina, a news presenter on local network Gotel Television, has reported stories that gathered a lot of attention, including the Boko Haram insurgency.

BBC reported that Amina captivated the panel through her story-telling and her ability to express difficult ideas in a way that resounds with a wide audience, hence, she will begin a three-month placement at the BBC in London in September.

“I was overwhelmed with joy. Storytellers have always had an important role in Africa… this is what defines us. Today journalists are taking on that responsibility,” she says, responding to her win.

Francesca Unsworth, BBC World Service Group Director said they were happy to work with Amina because she possesses Komla’s qualities.
