Earlier this month, we reported the story of a baby, Keyana, who was born without eyes and her mother’s promise of love towards her.

But for a 22-year-old Kenyan woman, Mariam Mwakombo, her baby girl born without eyes frightened her so much that she refused to breastfeed her.

Daily Nation reported that the baby cried till she died after 10 hours without food.

“She frightened me. I have never seen such a human being,” Mariam said, wondering how a human being can be born without eyes and a deformed nose.

The baby has been buried but she was buried outside their home to prevent such occurrence in the family.

Mariam explained that she attended ante natal twice because the hospital was located in a far distance and she could not afford to go to a private clinic, so, she resorted to traditional means.

“My water broke while I was doing my chores and she just came out. She’s seven months old. I never felt any pains during her birth. But on looking at her we realised she did not have eyes. I was dumb founded,” Mariam said.

Because of the health care strike in Kenyan, Mariam had her baby at home and immediately her baby’s condition was discovered, villagers and family members decided to throw her in a dungeon, so that the gods can take care of her.

“The best we can do is throw her in a dungeon in a forest. I did not name her, lest the omen falls on me,” Mariam said.

Just like Keyana’s story, the case of Mariam’s baby was suspected to be anophthalmia, a condition in which one or both eyes do not form during pregnancy.
