Many people don’t accept marital rape as an abuse in Nigeria because they erroneously believe that a woman’s husband owns her body and is entitled to it at any time he wants, even through rape. Many women are being sexually abused by their husbands but they can’t speak out for fear of being judged by the society.
Last week, Lagos state Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Aliyu Giwa shared a story of marital rape that has caused quite a stir, as many women believe that his story undermines the seriousness of marital rape.
Also that there is no law against marital rape is quite disheartening.

Story story! I’ve had this in mind for a very long time! Its been 3yrs tho.B4 I start! Can a married woman report being RAPED by her husband?
So one faithful day, this married woman came to the Police station to report her husband. Good enough I was at the charge room that day.
So I over heard her discussion with the Inspector who was the CRO( Charge room officer) for that day. Then she was asked “ma’am what hppnd?”
She replied “My useless husband raped me” with a nasty attitude. At that point I had to show interest,
Becos I was wondering why she had to answer in that manner. So I asked her another question immediately “ma’am please what really happened?
In her words she said “For almost 3 days now, I tell my husband say I no wan f*ck becos I get one special prayers for church wey I dey do”
….. na so him no fit hold body, him come f*ck me by force for midnight.”
In my head I was like what a wawu! So I asked her another Q: how long was this special prayers and where is ur husband?
She said “the fasting and prayers na for 2 weeks oh!” To cut the story short! So immediately, I asked 2 Policemen to go invite her husband.
Policemen arrived with the husband. Her husband looking all scared, and immediately she sighted her hubby she started crying!
Then I realised the incident happened four weeks before it was reported and it dawned on me spousal/marital rape is real in our society.
Even though there is no law against marital rape in the Nigerian constitution …Men shouldn’t have sex against their wives consent
In Nigeria, under the constitution principle of the legality theory, no one can be prosecuted for a crime which is unknown to the law
But that shouldn’t be a ground for me to take such advantage.
