Some are running away from troubles at home. some are running to look for greener pasters, some were lured with a promise of better lives, but many of them end up with the same story of abuse, exploitation and detention. This is the story of many Nigerian women who have experienced horror in Libya.
Doctorswithoutborders tell the story of a 21-year old Joy and 20-year old Fortune, who were beaten and tortured in a Libyan prison.
The young women made the treachorous journey from Nigeria, ending up in a Libyan detention centre where they were beaten and tortured by guards who demanded money from their families to secure their release.
They managed to take a rubber boat from Libya on May 27. The boat’s fuel ran out after a few hours into their journey and for two and a half days they drifted out into the open sea, without eating or drinking until a fisherman saw them and alerted the Tunisian coastguard, who brought them to Tunisia.
20 year old Fortune put her head in her hands after telling us what happened in Libya. Unfortuantely, their stories are very familiar to us.
