She was good at her job as a finance manager but Uzo Orimalade wanted to do what she enjoyed. So, she decided to follow her passion for baking and cooking, and this led to the creation of her company, Cupcake Couture Lagos, with just $50.
The opportunity to start her business in Nigeria came when she saw that frosted cupcakes that was been sold abroad was not properly done in Nigeria.
Her big break came when 500 cup cakes was ordered from her company.
Now, she does cup cakes and different kinds of cookies. She also launched a gourmet chin chin last year, which has surpassed the demands for cup cakes and Uzo’s dream is to commercialise it.
Asides Cupcake Couture Lagos, which provides retail and corporate clients with premium baked goods, Uzo’s Food Labs also provides consulting services to the food, beverage & hospitality industry.
Uzo tells African Voice, how she came about her, The Garden, an organic garden that sells organic cut produce and seedlings.
I was just amazed at how fulfilled I was, putting my hands in dirt and growing things and the satisfaction I got from seeing things growing and I began to share my progress on social media and then it became, “I want to learn about that, can you tell me how to do it?” or “I want to buy some of this stuffs. I don’t like some of the things I see in the stores. These are nice and fresh.”
So, I teach people to grow using just regular manure, using just egg shells as compost, using banana pills and you don’t have to go out and buy any chemicals, so, when you have all these things for your family, you know what they are putting into their systems.
