Should This Woman Face Murder Charges For Accidentally Killing A Man Who Was About To Rape Her

With the rate of rape in Nigeria and the attitude of law enforcement agencies over this menace, many women are learning to protect and defend themselves against rapists in any way they can.

Should a victim who unintentionally or even intentional kill her rapist while trying to defend herself, face murder charges? Should there even be any punishment at all?

These questions emerged from the story of a 22-year old lady, Rebecca Tina, who killed her uncle to stop him from raping her.

Punch reported that Tina said her uncle had been trying to forcefully have sex with her for a very long time until the night she ‘mistakenly’ killed him.

Tina explained that she hit a stone on her uncle’s head because he did not let her go.

“It was not my intention to kill him. I never intended to do so. He had been disturbing me for sex. I killed my uncle when he tried to rape me,” Tina said.

Tina was arrested and is in police custody in Enugu

No, she shouldn’t. If our law enforcement agencies were competent she would not have had to defend herself in the first place
