35,000 feet in the air and four hours away from their destination, Toyin Ogundipe, a 41 year old Nigerian, UK-based woman was delivered of a baby boy in an airplane.
Toyin was on her way to New York from Paris when she went into labour, a week earlier than when she was to deliver.
Thankfully, a urologist, Dr Sij Hemal was in the same plane with her.
Dr Sij was on his way home from his best friend’s wedding and was waiting to be served champagne when flight attendants asked for medical help over the loudspeaker.
Signifying he could help, Dr Sij used the airplane’s medical supplies to monitor vitals and contractions. 30 minutes later, Toyin held her healthy son in her arms!
Dr Sij removed the placenta and used a surgical clamp and shoestring to tie off the umbilical cord and cut it off with a pair of scissors.
The boy, named Jake, now has a US passport because they were flying in US airspace when he was delivered.
Even though Dr Sij was scared that Toyin could die from bleeding or shock after birth, he is grateful everything went well, and more thankful that he didn’t take that champagne.
‘I thought I’d just have a drink and fall asleep. As it turned out, I’m glad I didn’t drink anything,’ he said.
