Veteran singer, Stella Monye is calling on all kind-hearted Nigerians to help her only son, Ibrahim, to get a corrective surgery in Indiana.
An Ibadan-born singer, Stella was known for her activism style of music. Her songs, ‘Elenuwa’ and ‘Oko Mi Ye,’ was enjoyed across the country in the 90s.
Stella, who is a single mother, shared with a journalist, Azuka Jebose, how her 27 years old son, Ibrahim has been in pain for 17 years. Ibrahim was a 10-year old when he wanted to help one of his friends’ fetch water from their compound’s water tanker, barricaded by fences with sharp edged irons for security.
Ibrahim’s friend couldn’t climb over the fence to turn the tap, so Ibrahim offered to help and as he climbed the fence, he fell; his scrotum got caught by the sharp iron object on top of the fence. It penetrated his scrotum, tore flesh of the scrotum as it pinched deep inside his urethra.
Stella was on tour, NIGERIA ’99, with her colleagues when the incident happened, so, her mother took Ibrahim to the hospital and cared for him. Ibrahim had two major surgeries but the surgery and subsequent surgeries including the one in India, failed…
He now has kidney failures and requires dialysis three times a week but Stella can only afford two dialysis per month at N45, 000 each, which is not good for Ibrahim’s body.
His bladder is ruptured, so it bleeds into his abdomen, mixing with his urine, leaving him always infected. Stella has been told to take him outside the country for a corrective surgery, which costs N35 Million in Indiana, USA.
“Where will I get N35 MILLION to save Ibrahim from 17 years of living in miserable pain?” she lamented.
Recounting her ordeal in caring for Ibrahim over the years, Stella said,
Each morning, I clean my son’s opened stomach. Every week, we go into the hospital because of infections to his injuries, opened stomach and for his kidney dialyses.. His urethra is damaged. This process has caused him kidney disease. Ibrahim lives with tubes inserted in his lower abdomen.
His lower abdomen has been slashed open for two years: a tube is connected to his bladder to help him discharge his bodily fluids. We fight infections all the time with endless visits to the hospital and with antibiotic prescriptions. My home is a mini chemist…. I do not know how that boy is still alive. My son is in excruciating pain. He is 27. We began this traumatic melancholy at age 10. I have spent every penny earned to care for him. He still needs care.
I need help. Please Nigeria, help me. No amount is too small… I beg Nigeria; I am a mother just like you, your mother, your daughter, your sister, your niece, your grandmother. I am that same girl that brought great songs to your lives. Give me a sweet melody to lessen my burden and a hope with your donation…..Ibrahim is my only son.
