She Wanted To Be a Nurse, but She Got Hooked on Codeine…

Many Nigerians have expressed their concerns over the investigative report published by BBC on the addiction of young people to codeine cough syrup. Following the story, the Federal Government has banned the production and importation of codeine cough syrup.

According to BBC, “the Nigerian senate estimates that up to 3 million bottles of codeine are drunk *every day* in just 2 states, Kano and Jigawa. People who drink it are known as #sciencestudents.”

There is a call to parents to sit with their children and have an honest discussion with them about the effects of drug abuse. The story of a 16-year old girl whose dream is to become a nurse but now lies in a rehab centre dealing with withdrawal symptoms from drugs paints a clear picture of the state of drug addiction in the country.
