Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Nnedi Okoroafor have been nominated for the Alternative Nobel Prize for Literature.
After this year’s Nobel Prize, which is organised by the Swedish Academy was cancelled on grounds of a sexual scandal, an alternative prize was created by The New Academy.
The New Academy is a non-profit organization which comprises of Swedish from different businesses and backgrounds, who came together to ensure that writers still get the honour they deserve this year. The New Academy works within the time frame of the Swedish Academy.
Swedish Librarians were asked to nominate authors from across the world who have told the story of “mankind in the world,” and also have two published works, one of which must have been published within the last ten years.
Amazingly, two Nigerians, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Nnedi Okoroafor made this list of 46 writers.
Since Wole Soyinka won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986, no Nigerian has won it. Hopefully, this New Academy will give it to one of ours. Thankfully, these writers can be voted for.
The winner will be announced October 14th and presented at a formal event with a grand celebration December 10th 2018 and the New Academy will be dissolved after the grand celebration.
