ON STARTING BUSINESS

I actually have many businesses that I do but let me just share the important ones with the shortest explanation.

On blogging: I started play play blogging in 2014 and at the same time I was the PA/Secretary to Bar. Jimoh Ibrahim. Blogging was born out of the fact that I had free internet and free time in the office so, I told myself that instead of wasting that time let me use it to blog about my daily activities. So, I started posting about myself, my everyday experience with people, my mode of dressing and lots more.

As a PR Consultant: I never knew some important people noticed and were constantly reading my play play blogging. So, when it was time for 2015 election, I was contacted through my blog to know if I know top bloggers and I said yes (but sincerely I didn’t know anyone as at that time but being a smart lady I said yes because I believe there’s nothing God can’t do).

On saying yes, I was invited to meet with the then President Goodluck Jonathan on media ground. After my meeting with him, I was asked to be his Media Consultant and my job was to bring bloggers for press briefing, adverts and lots more. Remember I said I didn’t know any bloggers but guess what? I pulled that crowd and His Excellency was amazed and impressed. On doing that job very well, I decided to add PR consultant as part of my job and I have consulted and still consulting for government and private sections till date.

As a Presenter: I love to talk so, I decided to use the talent in making money rather than wasting it. Told few TV owners to call me for red carpet or anything presenting and they did and still do.

As a cobbler: In 2016, I was faced with some challenges and instead of giving up, I asked myself where’s my strength and what else I can do. On moving round Lagos to kill the challenges, I ran into a guy who makes shoes somewhere in Orile and Ajegunle so, I decided to enrol for a training. Finished the training and started my own shoe line in 2017 but was making for myself only.

Lots of people saw it on my leg and requested I make for them especially the one with glitters. At first I refused to make for anyone because they are branded with Bodex logo on it but too many people started asking. I sat down and did the math of what I might get or will become of me if I start and wow, the math was on point as so many gains popped up so I started taking orders till now.

My shoe line which is House Of Bodex is one of the fast rising shoe factory in Nigeria as I have made shoes for governors, senators, ministers, media personalities, business owners and Nigerians in diaspora. Good news is, I just opened another factory three days ago.

ON WHY SHE CHOSE HER LINE OF BUSINESSES

I love all my businesses because I do them with passion first after which I turn them to proper business that brings in money. Only a passionate business can bring you happiness and then money. If there’s another business that I have passion for, trust me I will add it to my numerous ones because I just hate to be a waste. So the many the options, the better the strategy

ON HOW SHE KNEW IT WAS GOING TO WORK

Anything that gives you sleepless nights or that makes you wanna do more will always be something that will work out no matter how short or long. When I also tell myself I am not giving up I know it MUST work.

HOW SHE RAISED CAPITAL TO START THE BUSINESS

Funny enough my capital has always been by grace of God i.e when I started blogging, there was free internet to be used. Being a presenter, I didn’t need capital but transport fare after which I will get paid, although some don’t pay. Same goes to PR jobs, as you will pay before I start running your advert. For the shoes, since people were the ones requesting that I make for them, I smartly told them it’s strictly payment before production which they gladly accepted and paid plus I was only having 3k to start with. So, I used their money to make their shoes and also remove my gain. Shikena

The short and long of this explanation is that, entrepreneurs should learn to do business that will make them in charge and not in want. Complexity in business equals to complexity in capital so, derive passion in something you can sustain with little money else you will always give up. Also, it’s advisable to start with clients base that you can manage before you blow in your line of business.

ON WHETHER SHE STARTED MAKING PROFIT SOON

All my businesses are profit orientated meaning even if money isn’t coming out yet, having passion to do it is satisfactory and happiness put in place. But for me, my profits started immediately on all except for blogging which paid off when I became the PR consultant for President Goodluck Jonathan and mind you, I only blogged for three months or so before I got the contract so, it’s Grace from God

HOW SHE MARKETS HER SERVICES

Like I said earlier, start a business with a client base that you can manage and also do a business that everybody needs. If your brilliant idea is limited to people then you have to work extra miles to get such clients base which is time and money consuming. But if you already have good clients base for your brilliant ideas then you can push with little efforts. Aside our economic instability, business owners only suffer for doing wrong business at wrong places. It’s like me selling gold in Ajegunle, how will such idea fly? But if I am in Lekki, then it will fly. So, come up with business ideas depending on where you are, the type of humans there and their needs.

HER EXPERIENCE HIRING STAFF

I do not agree with you that you can’t do everything. As a business owner, you should be able to do everything or better still have ideas of what you do so that when staff want to strike you take up your work yourself and fill in the gap. All my businesses are in autopilot meaning whether staff is there or not I am working. No staff can mess me up because I know the work too. When I am blogging, I set shoes and my workers complete it. When I am out of the country I don’t take orders because it’s time to rest and blog only. Business owners must learn how to manage their time well so they won’t be at the mercy of any staff.

HER GREATEST STRENGTH THAT HAS SUSTAINED THE BUSINESS

My strength comes from God and also from the fact that I keep telling myself that I must be great and successful more than all the powerful women in the whole world.

ON IF SHE GOT A FORMAL TRAINING

I didn’t train for the blogging, PR consultation and presenting. I trained for show making and I’m still training.

ON WHAT SHE WISHED SHE HAD KNOWN BEFORE SHE STARTED

To start when no one is really paying attention and I now know you can do anything anytime irrespective of your age. The most important thing is just to start.

ON LIFE EXPERIENCES THAT PREPARED HER

The fear of rejection or selection (i.e people choosing the rich over the poor. I always wanna be wherever anyone can get to irrespective of my background) and knowing that I wasn’t born with silver or diamond spoons.

ON WHAT NEW THINGS SHE HAS DISCOVERED ABOUT HERSELF IN THE COURSE OF STARTING AND RUNNING HER BUSINESS

I don’t joke with my money. Lol

THE GREATEST BUSINESS ADVICE SHE HAS EVER RECEIVED

“Bodex, build your brand to the height that people will have no choice than to identify with you and also celebrate you”… Otunba Femi Davies.
