How 17-Year Old Sharon Is Using This Ingenious Idea to Help Fishermen in Makoko Get Better Income

Makoko, a community across the 3rd Mainland Bridge located on the coast of mainland Lagos, is one of the largest slums in the state. The community is also known for fishing. While the men are the fishermen, the women sell the fishes.

However, as many fishes as these fishermen and their women sell, a 17-year old daughter of a fisherman, Sharon believes that they do not get enough money because of the many middlemen involved in the sale of the fishes. So, she decided to create a website, Makoko Fresh– a platform where people can get fresh sea foods directly from the fishermen.

The 11th child, Sharon decided her life would not be like that of her friends who are married and now have children. So, when Abisoye Ajayi-Akinfolarin invited her to a coding class, she grabbed the opportunity.

Abisoye Ajayi-Akinfolarin is a computer programmer teaching girls from low-income communities how to code. Her free program, GirlsCoding, has helped hundreds of disadvantaged girls gain the technical skills and confidence to transform their lives.

For Abisoye, it is not just about coding but solving problems like Sharon did. And their slogan, “When girls learn to code, the world will run without bugs,” inspires them to code towards a purpose.

“I hope to be a software engineer. I see myself working with one of the biggest companies in the world,” Sharon tells CNN
