Mariam Kayode’s Journey To Becoming The Youngest AMVCA ‘Best Actress’ Nominee


On the 1st of September, an 11-year old girl, Mariam Kayode became the youngest to be nominated for the Best Actress in a Drama/TV Series at the Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards.

Although, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde clinched the award, being nominated alongside veterans, is an achievement in the young girl’s career.

Mariam’s role in the movie, Children of Mud, earned her the nomination. In the movie, she played the role of a young girl, Emem, who was forced to fend for herself and her blind brother after they were kicked out by their aunt, who believed her brother is a wizard.

Mariam’s journey into acting started when she was 8 and she played the role of a girl with an alter ego whose father was murdered in her mum’s class project. Her mum discussed her potentials with her dad and she was allowed to take up acting roles.

Mariam has featured in three movies, Darklight, Happiness Ltd, Don’t Leave Me; a music video, The Nigerians, and a short fim, Children Of Mud.

Asides from acting, she hopes to make a good lawyer defending children’s rights.
