The former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili has declared her intentions of running for the post of the president in the 2019 elections. Through a series of tweets, Ezekwesili said she will be running under the umbrella of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN).
“…today, in response to the candidates of the #ACPPDP, I have officially declared my candidacy to run as a citizen, alongside you and other citizens, for President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2019. Our message is HOPE. Our hashtag is #Hope2019,” she tweeted, ading that, “…it is time for you to ignore the doubts of “there is not enough time” and “good people can’t win in Nigeria” and join us in doing your own part.”
In an article titled, “Why I am running,” Ezekwesili explained that running for the presidential election is the hardest decision she has taken in her life, however, the urgent need for a better nation is her motivation.
She explained that she desires to be the champion that Nigeria needs to be better and she is ready to put both her career and reputation in the line for that. According to her, under her watch, everything serving as the barrier to a new and better Nigeria, including the two dominant parties-APC and PDP, would be pulled down.
Despite being advised to wait till 2023 as she stands a better chance of winning then, Ezekwesili said, she has to run now that her nation needed her the most.
As president, Ezekwesili said, her government would focus and be measured by a high standard of living; adult literacy; life expectancy at birth and a strong, resilient, sustainable and thriving nation which we shall measure by the fragility index.
Ezekwesili promises to proffer solutions to unemployment and underemployment; fight corruption and provide good security. She promises to position the private sector as the key to the productivity and expansion of the economy. Under her leadership, she said, the young shall have their moment to demonstrate that they have the skills and attitudes to lead the rest of the world through knowledge.
She explained that her government will substitute oil focused governance with human capital governance and education will be the new economy and oil.
One of the things people will be hearing a lot when Ezekwesili becomes president is, equality of opportunity. She urged people to get used to it as everyone, no matter who they are or where they come from, there would be equal opportunity for all.
