Since the creation of Bolanle Austen-Peters Productions, the theater industry bar has been raised with a number of highly-regarded musicals like SARO the Musical, Wakaa the Musical, 93 days and Fela and the Kalakuta Queens.
Known for telling the best stories from Nigeria, this Christmas would not be any different as Bolanle through BAP Productions will be telling the story of the legendary Queen Moremi of Ile-Ife.
Tagged Queen Moremi the Musical, the story borders on Ile-Ife’s unforgettable female legend.
The Olori Moremi lived in the 12th century, and was married to the then king of Ile Ife, a kingdom that is said to have been at war with an adjoining tribe who were known to them as the Forest people (Ìgbò in the Yoruba language).
The people of Ife were being enslaved by the Ìgbò people and Moremi decided to do all in her power to bring this to an end, including offering anything she had to give in sacrifice to the Spirit of the river Esimirin.
Soon after, she was captured as a slave. Being a brave and beautiful woman, the Ìgbò ruler married her as his queen. After familiarizing herself with the secrets of her new husband’s army, she escaped to Ile-Ife and revealed this to her people, who were able to subsequently defeat the Ìgbò people in battle.
Following the war, she returned to her first husband in Ile-Ife and then, fulfilled the pledge of sacrificing her son to Esimirin.
The story of Queen Moremi is one of pain, patriotism and sacrifice.
