A set of conjoined twins have been successfully separated by a team of doctors at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada.

The boys were born in June 2018 and remained at the hospital since birth, following doctor’s advice that the surgery could only happen at four months old, so, the twins underwent the surgery on 29th of October 2018.

In a chat with BBC News Pidgin, Dr. Olori Samson, a Chief Consultant Paediatric surgeon and was one of the doctors who performed the operation, said that the boys were joined in their skin, liver and chest bone.

According to him, the surgery took them only four hours, meanwhile, they had planned to spend more than six hours.

“As we realized that it wasn’t only their skin that had the problem, we ensured to use things that would not make the liver bleed too much.  I am very happy because this is the first time we will be encountering conjoined twins in Abuja and other northern parts. It’s not that they have not attempted separating conjoined twins before but they die,” he said.
