Joyce started drinking alcohol at 21. The first time she took it, it was fun to her as she felt braver. She could talk to anybody.
Joyce came from a Catholic background, so, she made it a point of duty not to make her parents know. However, by the time she turned 24, she was drinking everyday. Sometimes, she drank to stupor and there was no way she could hide it anymore.
With her parents in the know of her drunkenness, they felt if she got married, she would become sober. But when Joyce got married, she continued to drink to stupor.
Being pregnant did not even stop her. Her husband had to go warn the people selling alcohol in their neighbourhood not to sell to her but Joyce had a way of getting what she wanted. Her drinking tripled her chances of getting a miscarriage but she was too addicted to stop. Thankfully, she had her baby but one month after childbirth, Joyce went back to drinking to stupor.
Taking alcohol took Joyce to rock bottom as it made her violent. Moreover, there is the tag of a prostitute attached to a woman taking alcohol in Ghana. Many times, she cried and wished to stop but she was helpless.
15 years later, Joyce stopped taking alcohol just by learning how to make beads, now Joyce decided to share her secret with her friend, who she now sees as family.
“I just needed something to do one day at a time to keep me sober. Its very therapeutic. I just get sober and soaked in it that I don’t love to drink,” she told BBC Africa.
Since September 26, 2016, Joyce has not relapsed again. She is living a normal life now and her children (a girl and a boy) don’t have any abnormalities through her drinking but she prays to God that none of her children will be an alcoholic.
Now, Joyce is helping other women who are suffering from alcohol addiction by sharing her story with them.
