Mariam Nabatanzi is considered to be one of the most fertile woman in Uganda, after giving birth to 44 children!

The 38-year old woman has six sets of twins, four sets of triplets, three sets of quadruples and single births, and they are all fathered by one man! Sadly, she is left with 38 children after she lost six children.

She has a condition called hyper-ovulation, which means her ovaries release more than one egg and this gives her a high chance of having multiple births. She said she tried different birth control methods but they didn’t work for her.

In 1993, 12-year old Mariam was married off to a 40-year old man, who already had many children from his past relationships. Her father-in-law gave her and her husband a piece of land to start their family and her plan was to have six children.

Mariam’s first birth was twins. Two years later, she gave birth to triplets and a year and seven months after that, she had a set of quadruplets. Multiple births was not strange to Mariam as her father gave birth to 45 children, who all came in quintuplets, quadruples, twins and triplets.

Surprisingly, Mariam delivered all her children naturally, except her last child, who was delivered through C-section. At the birth of her last child, Mariam told her doctor to stop her from having more children.

Sadly, Mariam is the only one catering for all of her children. Everyday, Mariam buys 15 jerry cans of water, 10kg of maize flour, four kilogrammes of sugar and three bars of soap. Her husband is an absentee father, who sneaks in at night and rushes off in the morning.

“He does not provide for basic needs and welfare of the family; the children hardly know who he is since he is an absent father who gives his children names over the phone and not physically. I carry these humiliations because my aunt advised me to always endure in marriage and have my children as the center of focus,” she told Daily Monitor.

Mariam does all manner of menial jobs to get money but it isn’t always enough. Despite the huge expenses that goes into caring for her children, Mariam has managed to send all her children to school.
