The 2018 Market March took place yesterday, the 15th of December at Yaba Market and it was successful!

The Market March, an initiative aimed at empowering women to feel safe when at the markets to do their shopping, was founded by Damilola Marcus. The march is aimed at calling the attention of market sellers to the grievances of buyers, especially women.

Yesterday, many young women marched to popular Yaba market, campaigning against harassment, objectification, groping, catcalling of women and girls in Nigerian markets.

Although the march was successful, the young women who took place in the exercise shared the attitude of male market sellers to the march. According to them, they were booed and called hurtful names. Thankfully, they had the escort of the police.

Sadly, some men still think that women are being harassed in the market because of how they are dressed. According to some who commented on the experiences of the women who took part in the march, indecent dressings should rather be addressed.

Thankfully, many showed support for this movement as they also made suggestions on how the march can be more effective.

We give kudos to these women and we hope that this initiative will be taken to other markets across the country.
