An aggrieved 62-year old woman, Madam Stella Ubogwu, whose daughter allegedly died in her husband’s house, is demanding for justice.
In a chat with Legit.ng, Madam Stella said that her daughter was brought by her husband from London to Enugu, where he allegedly killed her for money ritual. According to her, her daughter had traveled to London after her university education and had promised to take care of her, knowing how much she suffered over her and her siblings.
Soon, she called her to tell her about a man, Mr.Chukwumago, who proposed marriage to her but Madam Stella asked her daughter to discontinue their relationship.
Madam Stella explained that, because of what she told her daughter, Mr. Chukwumago made her daughter stop calling her for 12 years. Worried, Madam Stella tried to call some people in London to know the whereabouts of her daughter but nobody knew where she was.
Unknowing to Madam Stella, her daughter had come down to Enugu with Mr. Chukwumago and had bore him children without marriage or introduction of both families.
“Until 2016 when I was called that she was seriously ill. I wanted to know the nature of her illness but they did not explain to me. All I asked them was that I want to know when she came down to Nigeria and where she was staying in Enugu and when she became sick because I have not been hearing from her”, Madam Stella said.
The next time Madam Stella heard about her daughter, she was dead. Heartbroken by the news, she went to complain at a police station in Enugu and she was referred to the Commissioner of police, who noted it was a case of kidnap and murder, so, he demanded that Mr. Chukwumago was arrested.
When Mr. Chukwumago was apprehended, he explained that Madam Stella’s daughter was at the mortuary but he could only show the police and not the mother.
“On getting to the mortuary, the police saw the corpse and took photographs of her. but they have scraped her hair, cut one of her hands, they have removed her breasts and her private parts. When the police asked questions at the mortuary, the attendants said the husband came to sleep with the wife in the mortuary for three days”, Madam Stella explained.
After seeing the photographs of her late daughter, Madam Stella returned to her base in Delta to inform her family of the sad event. On getting back to Enugu to continue with the case of prosecuting Mr. Chukwumago, Madam Stella realised that he had been released.
When she confronted the police, they begged her to let go of the case and allow her late daughter to be buried. When she refused and demanded to see the corpse of her daughter, so as to be taken to her family house in Delta, the police resorted to harassment.
“The police said, I’m a stubborn mother. They said, is my daughter the first to die the way she died? That I should allow them bury the girl and forget about drawing case,” Madam Stella explained.
Realising that many of the policemen in Enugu have compromised on the case, Madam Stella decided to see a lawyer in Lagos, who promised that the case would be taken care of, but there’s been no result.
“Since then, we’ve been looking for this young man and the five children my daughter have for them. I can’t even see them. They’ve been hiding the children away from me”, Madam Stella said.
When Mr. Chukwumago’s father, who is one of the elders in a Deeper Life church in Enugu, was troubled about the death of Madam Stella’s daughter, he brought 12 elders from his church to appeal to her and also told her that his son wants to come and pay his late wife’s dowry.
Madam Stella has refused to accept the dowry but some of her family members are insisting that it should be paid since her late daughter had children for Mr. Chukwumago’s family.
“So, I am crying out to Nigerians, begging people to help me because, up till today, whether my daughter has been buried or still in the mortuary, we don’t know. And we learnt that he refused to embalm the body so that the marks of cutting on it will not be discovered. I have been on this case for three years, that’s why I’m crying out to Nigerians. I want this five children so that they wont be used the way their mother was used”, She said.
