People are mourning the death of a 17-year-old pregnant rape victim and others who died on the Benin-Auchi Expressway in Edo State.

She alongside her  uncle, their driver and two people working for the NGO helping her get justice, were reportedly traveling in a car to the Evbuoraria Magistrates’ Court, Benin, where judgment was to be delivered in a case involving the rape victim’s father when a truck hit their vehicle.

The advocacy officers worked with a non-governmental organization, the Brave Heart Initiative, who was in charge of the teenager’s case, before the sad incidence.

In a Facebook post by the NGO, the teenager was allegedly defiled by her 54-year old father, Jacob Alonge, and gotten pregnant in the process. But her father, who is said to possess diabolical powers, aborted the first pregnancy in 2017.

The teenager got pregnant by her father again in 2018 and she confided in a relative, who in turn got the community involved before he was arrested by the police.  The case was to be heard on January 11, 2019, but was adjourned till January 16 for judgment.

Meanwhile, around 6am on the D-day, Punch reported that the founder of the NGO, Priscilla Usiobaifo said she had a feeling that something bad would happen.

“I have supported over 100 sexual abuse survivors, but I feel very different about this particular case,” Punch reported.

Sadly, the victim, her uncle, the advocacy officer, and the man who drove them did not reach the court before they met their sudden death.

“The court was waiting for them to arrive when the IPO broke the news of the accident. The magistrate and everybody were devastated and they postponed everything. The survivor is still unstable in the hospital. They were all in a car when a truck rammed them. The accident happened between 7.30am and 8am at Ewu on the Auchi-Benin Road. There were four casualties in all: the victim, her uncle, my advocacy officer and the driver”, Priscilla said.

In a reaction to the tragedy, the NGO has shut down indefinitely.
