These Photos Of Supposed 17-Year Old Boy And 15-Year Old Girl Are Causing A Stir Online

A twitter user shared the pictures of a supposedly 17-year old boy, Aliyu and his 15-year old bride, Aisha, wishing them a happy married life but this has started a conversation on early marriage and people are sharing their opinions on the matter.

Meanwhile, the issue was one of the topics discussed on YourView show on Television Continental and one of the presenters, Akashat Ny’mat said that the marriage of the teenagers is not necessarily Islamic as thought by many people.

She explained that the age of adulthood and Western world are totally different, so, the parameters to measuring maturity is different, hence, “….the rule in Islam says that once sexual urge starts to come, one of the measures to curb is to allow marriage. When a child starts to feel emotions for someone else, if that person meets the criteria of a responsible young man, irrespective of what society defines it as, the parents should allow them marry. They can go ahead and co-habit in a legally married situation,” Ny’mat  said, noting that teenage marriage exists in other country, however, “….what the law requires is that until they turn 18, they require the consent of an adult which is what happened in this situation that we have. So, around the world, marrying at this age is under the caveat of parental consent before it happens.”

For Ny’mat, with the level of education she has, she would not allow her 14-year old daughter get married. According to her, she would rather have a talk with her, “and see if she can be in control of the urges and watch her and guide her as a parent should. But if the solution is marriage, I’ll let it happen. I won’t allow premarital sex in my house.”

Meanwhile, it was gathered online that Aliyu is following his family tradition of marrying early as male children in his family marry at the age of 17, while the female ones marry at 15. But despite this explanation, many people think that the couple are still too young to be married, while some people pose that early marriage is better than fornication.

According to those in support of early marriage, below are their reasons

And for those who think that the couple are too young, below are their reasons

They don’t know the implications, I got married at 17 but it God’s grace to remain in the marriage till date. Children should be up to 25 years old before getting married.
