Favour Ebubechukwu: Dear Women, Let Us Light Our Candles

Despite all the discrimination against women, many women have attained great heights.

One of them is Ngozi Okonjo Iweala.

She was born into the Okonjo family, from Ogwashi-Ukwu in Delta State, but she was not secluded to the kitchen-for-girls lifestyle that was the norm in the society.

She started as an intern in the World Bank Group and has worked for many years as a development economist, scaling high globally to date. No societal discrimination or unrealistic expectation could hinder her.

Another woman who has achieved great heights is Jumoke Adenowo.

She designed the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja, at age 23. She is also the Founder of Ad Consulting and the winner of Forbes Woman Africa 2020.

We also have women like Virginia Etiaba, the first female governor in Nigeria, Obiageli Ezekwesili, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, Pastor Ibukun Awosika, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and many more.

If we look beyond Nigeria, we will see Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Lisa Nichols, Hillary Clinton, Joyce Meyer, Nadia Helmy Ahmed, and many others.

History is also filled with great women like Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, Margaret Ekpo, Ladi Dosei Kwali, Florence Nwanzuruahu Nkiru Nwapa, Kofo Ademola, Elizabeth Abimbola Awoliyi, Ibidunni Ighodalo, and many more.

Although there is still cultural, religious, and societal subjugation, women need to continue to seek and choose enlightenment. Like the saying, “it is far better to light the candle than curse the darkness”.

Our generation even has a better advantage because we have many examples of outstanding women before and among us. We also have organizations, platforms (especially digital) founded by many distinguished women that provide great support for us.

It is time for us to take advantage of the opportunities flowing around us.

There are many reasons to shrink back from living our dreams as women, but we need to draw inspiration from women who have gone before us, use the opportunities available to us and rise up to be more than just a girl.
