To many women, Aevin Dugas’ hair is both an inspiration and #hairgoals.
Aevin is the Guinness World Record holder for female with the largest Afro at 4ft 7inches in circumference.
Aevin’s natural hair journey started when she saw a picture of her mum wearing an Afro in the sixties and she really loved it. She then decided to do the big chop and has since spent over 14 years growing her hair. Today, her hair is inspiring legions of women to ditch chemical straighteners and go natural.
Having such volume of hair isn’t without its own challenges, especially on wash days. For Aevin, it can take two days to wash and dry her hair. To get her hair ready for a night out, she uses up to five conditioners and then plaits her hair into French braids. From then, it takes about two days to dry.
Aevin’s decision to wear her natural hair was made when wearing one’s natural hair was considered unattractive in the black community but today, she is seen as a hero especially in her hometown of Napoleonville, Louisiana, where everyone from toddlers to grandmothers are following in her footsteps.
Her greatest joy is having young girls appreciate her hair and then wanting to wear their hair like hers.
