Seyitan Ojo: How I Raised Funds To Start My Jewelry Business

Without boring you with motivational speaking, I will just share my story and hope someone learns one or two things from it.

When I finished my NYSC, I was dead broke and frustrated. My parents weren’t doing well financially so no one to really lean on.

I was trying hard to get a job but nothing was coming forth so I knew I had to start a business to keep me afloat.

My first thought was the jewellery and accessories business. I have always had a good eye for cheap and unique jewellery and I used to get a lot of compliments about them.

I also know how to comb through Lagos markets to get them cheap. Also, I am good at sales, so I know I will sell anywhere I go.

So considering these, I settled for the jewellery business, knowing that I can conveniently make decent profits on it. I wanted to start with some decent enough money too so that my profit can make sense.

I made a list of people that could give me or borrow me N5k each. The list included people from church, neighbourhood, extended family, friends and their boyfriends, aunties, uncles, etc

I had a long list.

I started contacting them and explaining my business idea and how I am confident I can grow it. By the time I finished, I had raised over 150k. Some people gave me less than 5k, some gave more, and some were not able to help. Some people borrowed me, and many gave me.

I carried my goods with me anywhere I went, I sold at church, in the neighbourhood, at parties, in offices and everywhere. I even sold to many men by convincing them to buy for their mums, wives and daughters.

From that business, I was able to take care of myself while looking for a job, do my professional exams, and had some savings. I also paid back those I borrowed from, and I bought a small gift for everyone who borrowed and gave me money.

It has been some years now and I have since moved on to other things and no longer do this business, but I am always grateful for that business and the people who helped me.
